The Male Gaze and Female Gaze

The male gaze can be described as something purely for heterosexual males by heterosexual males. It show the singer or main lead objectified in sexual mannerisms. The camera may focus on certain parts of the female body with slow pans up and down the body.

The first two stills to the left show the reactions of males around the room, which show how they feel about the lady walking past. The third still shows the 'boyfriend' 'spanking' the lady, the next still shows the lady once again but this time focuses on her rear. This shot clearly attracts focus to one part of the lead girls body. The reactions that have come before can almost be said to show how males watching should react to the shot and the lady. Although this video does not show a lot when it comes to male gaze. This could be because the main demographic of the band consists of younger females. This style of video may have been made to attract a wider range of audiences. The final still comes after the camera pans down in slow motion over her body.

A more obvious video to portray the male gaze could be considered to be this one:

The female gaze is more recent and is around to show males as the objectified ones who have little to do apart from 'stay around and look pretty'

This video actually starts out with the treatment of the video being discussed by an official from the record label. After laughable suggestions, one of the girls comments about how this is happening because Jennifer is female. If this was in fact a video for a male singer the singer would be 'in mansion surrounded by half naked women for no reason'. The conversation then continues to address the idea of objectifying men in this video 'because who says it always has to be women who are objectified. Although there are certain shots with risque choreography, the majority of the video shows barely clothed men surrounding Jennifer Lopez while she sings.
