Test Export after hoping to fix colour change

video draft Vimeo

prelim edit from Roshni Mepani on Vimeo.

This version on Vimeo seems to be the same as the version on Youtube. This leaves one other reason for the change in colour correction. When exported the colour correction must have changed its code.
I researched on this issue and found I am not the only person to encounter this problem.

Video Draft youtube

This is my draft for my music video. What I have noticed is the colour correction looks different once exported.

This is the original version in final cut, the below picture shows the video on YouTube. There is a clear difference with the colour. The final cut version looks more orange and suits the atmosphere with the candle better. However the youtube version looks more green and washed out. This ruins the quality of the video and it simply looks like it was done in day light with very strong lights.

To fix this, one of my teachers suggested to try uploading the video to Vimeo, because Vimeo generally had better quality and has different coding to YouTube

In these pictures, the green around Nicole's lips also shows through in the youtube version *bottom picture* the picture above does not show a line with the green screen

Wicca or dark magic (witchcraft in popular media)

A Very British Witchcraft. from DJ Devil on Vimeo.

Although stating I wanted my video to mirror Wicca, I have now found, Wicca is more about connecting one self with the nature around them. Wicca ritual take place in woodland areas - all around nature.  Their rituals are to meditate and to reflect on what they have achieved in their lifetime.

Wicca, is not something to do with the popular belief of 'dark/black magic'.

This belief derrives from something else, so I will change my description to witchcraft, which is seen more as 'dark magic. This belief has been aided by the success of media such as 'The Witches', 'Hocus Pocus', 'Buffy' 'The Secret Circle', 'The Vampire Diaries' and the spin off of 'The Vampire Diaries' - 'The Originals'

Shot Types

Behind the scenes

On the day of the shoot, this is what I had pre-prepared - a small glass bowl containing 'blood'. I made this blood by mixing washing up liquid and red food colouring. I had learnt this trick while working at the BFI during the week of the BFI Media Conference. This gives the correct consistency of blood

This picture here shows the set up of the green screen and my actress filming the lip sync.

This is the soft-box I had set up to provide the lighting for my music video.

These two pictures show the pentagram I used for the ritualistic parts of my music video. The picture to the left shows the process of drawing the pentagram. I drew the symbol with some white chalk on a cement covered ground.

Symbol Influence - 7

In my video, I have two different rituals, one with a pentagram and another with some blood. For the scene with the blood drawn symbol, I was heavily influenced by this scene from the now cancelled TV show 'The Secret Circle'. The symbol can be seen within the first 33 seconds.

For my video, I adapted the symbol slightly to show the number '7' in the style in 'The Secret Circle'. The reason for the number 7 was because the song is called 'Seven Devils' and it is one of the 'Seven Deadly Sins' chasing the lead. Here is how I did it:

Shot Type Influence - Looking up

For the ending of my music video I wanted to reveal who the 'supernatural being' was. In order to do this I took influence from a shot in another music video, Lolita - The Veronicas. Throughout this blog I have mentioned this song and video many times because parts of it reflect the atmosphere I really want. The shot I drew influence from can be seen at the beginning and at 1:51 in.

I created this shot from being influenced by the above video

Existing Magazine Adverts

These are examples of existing magazine Adverts I have found. The adverts relate to the album and all contain specifics. Such as a visual, the name of the artist and album and also business information such as the record label and/or publisher.

I have included a magazine for the debut album of the original artist of my song - Florence + The Machine. I included Marina and The Diamonds and Evanescence as I believe these artists are similar to the artist I will create.

Magazine Ad - what to include

Include:
Artist name
album title
'OUT NOW' Physical copy
star ratings with publication name
quote from publication
artist website
social media
Record label logo
Parental Advisory stamp
'Hit Singles......'
Following the smash hit debut

My Actress

My lead actress is a fellow media peer - Nicole. Nicole is 18 years old, has a pale complexion and dark purple hair. She is currently studying for her A levels and is studying Media, Drama and English.
She hopes to study business at university. The song I have chosen is not exactly what Nicole would listen to on a daily basis. In general, Nicole would listen to Pop and RnB and not Alternative Rock as is Florence And The Machine.

THE eyeliner

When thinking about the Mise-en-scen, I came across this picture, and decided to use it for my artist in the music video as it is not something you see every day; and my video would not be considered an everyday music video.
I followed the same colour scheme at first...
I could not find the same blue so tried to find any blue eyeliner:

The picture on the left shows smudged blue liquid eyeliner with a stroke of black liquid eyeliner on top. The right shows the opposite - there is black liquid eyeliner on the bottom with smudged blue liquid eyeliner on top.

I Then found a tutorial by the Kat Von D who uploaded the original picture

I also changed the colour from Blue to purple because I thought it would suit the atmosphere more.

I then followed the video and mixed it with what I had come up with originally. This is what I came up with. The picture to the left shows the blue liquid eyeliner, although this time it is not smudged, topped with a light, almost violet colour. The right shows the same as the left but with a darker purple pencil liner. The picture below shows the darker purple pencil eye liner and the smudged blur liquid eyeliner.

I will be using the smudged liquid blue eyeliner with the darker pencil purple eyeliner.

Lip Sync Update

When I tried to film the lip synch, I found although the actress has very dark lip lipstick on, on camera and under lighting it looked very pink!
Also with filming the extreme close up, the camera continuously lost it's focus so for the next try I will have to find another way to make sure this works well without losing focus or the effect of the extreme close up.

Lip Sync Shoot

Today I will be filming the lip sync. I will film 3 versions. One front on and the other two from different sides.
With me I will have a copy of the lyrics, the song itself, a green screen, camera and some lighting.
For the visuals, I'm only filming them as very close up shots, so the only my actress' lips will be seen, for this, I have some dark lipstick, the same lipstick used in the other shots.

Symbolic Details

For one of the parts to my narrative, I will need to represent some sort of witch craft symbol. One idea would be to go work with a pentagram

Aside from the pentagram, I have two other options as seen below. With the context of these I am not sure if they symbols do actually represent anything, but have frequently been used in TV shows surrounding witch craft.

The pentagram will be the best known symbol, however, the other two being more unknown may add more of an effect on the atmosphere of the video with the unknown symbols.

Edit So Far

This is the edit  I have so far. I still need to film the 'ritual' and 4 lip syncs. I have more footage than  can actually make use of so not all of the footage in on the timeline.

I have also now placed markers on the beat of the drums so I know where to cut the footage so it matches the beat.

Change of storyline:

For the narrative aspect of my music video, the initial video was for the lead to be chased by own sin in real time. However when shooting this scene, the atmosphere had to be creepy so I shot the scenes at around 5pm after sunset. This did not turn out well because it was too dark and there was very little street light and I could not use studio lights because I was outside so did not have access to a power supply.
Within the next few days I re-filmed the footage in day light at around 1pm. This shoot had the correct lighting and I could actually see my actress on screen. My plan was to then edit the footage to make it look like night in post production. However, after trying to edit the footage, I found the best I could do was make it more blue. This did not make it look like night. Rather than finding the perfect time to re-film, I have now changed the details slightly to show the lead chased by her own sin in her dream, possibly sleep paralysis. To further this, I will have to show some sort of ritual which has led to the state of sleep paralysis.

Here is what the 'dream' footage will now look like:

Fans Of The Supernatural

As mentioned my video will centre around witchcraft and the supernatural. This inspiration comes from the current rise of success of TV shows featuring such concepts; Buffy, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, The Secret Circle etc.
There has also been an increase in the amount of people basing their music around the notion of witchcraft too - this all has had mixed responses.

This Screenshot shows a comment left on a song called 'Santified' - one of the other comments also refers to The Originals (one of the TV shows based around Witches, Vampires, Werewolves and hybrids of all 3).
In terms of Buffy, the character was 16 when the show started and it ran for 7 seasons leading Buffy to be 23 years old by the end. Due to the long run, the audiences grew up with the show, hence the reason for the age range of the TV show to be 16-34.
In terms of the other 3 shows; The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and The Secret circle, they are all linked and share, relatively the same audience. The Vampire Diaries was the first to air out of all 3 and was originally a book written by L.J Smith, the same author wrote the books The Secret Circle which led to that franchise being made into a TV show. Lastly, The Originals is a spin off of The Vampire Diaries portraying where it all began with the original family of Vampires, Witches and Werewolves.

Referring back to the screenshot - as you can tell, not everyone is impressed with the popularity of the supernatural, despite this, it continues to rise, especially with the coupled rise of New Religious Movements. The song this was left on, was by The Veronicas, whom I have heavily based my artist on.

Target Audience

As seen on the previous post about the original artists fans; I have constructed my own target audience.

I have concluded on my target reach being between the ages 14 - 25. This is the general age range of fans of TV shows which portray elements of the supernatural.

Below I have a picture of a female and male - both, people I would target this product towards

Both are between the ages of 14-25
The female is of Australian decent, now living in LA where there is a lot of commotion surrounding rituals, with many people leaving institutional religion to move onto the New Religious Movement of Spirituality - where magic and the use of crystals can be seen around many places and around many people. Prior to LA, she spent a few months in Nashville, where there is an increasing interest in voodoo and thematic magic.

The male is younger than the female and is currently studying for his A - Levels, studying Philosophy, Business and English Literature; due to the rise of TV shows centred around the supernatural, he too, has a keen interest of entertainment from the concepts surrounding these TV shows. Although he is not necessarily of a NRM, he does have a keen interest.

Due to the genre and type of voice, I don't think my target audience would have a specific look or appearance - their interest in Paige Cavern would simply derive from common ground around the supernatural.

check original artists' demographic - Facebook/twitter
As can be seen here, the fan demographic for the original artist ranges from ages 18-24. Although this stat is not fully representive because not all fans or admires of the band will have liked the fan page and also not all fans have a Facebook account so they would not be able to like the page.

Digi Pak Ideas

This is my initial  idea for the digi pak. With feedback received I will now change the theme to either fire or shadows, both of which feature in my music video. I may also use the same photo shoot with different filters when designing the digi pak or even the same photo with different filters.
